HOW TO PREVENT BULLYING IN SCHOOLS

INTRODUCTION

Bullying is an aggressive action or behavior which is intentional, unwanted, and common among school children, the action is often repeated which could be verbal, relational, or physical. Most of the time, boys bully other children through physical means while girls bully other children through social brush off. Bullying behaviors/actions include: removal of someone from a group intentionally, threats, spreading rumors about someone, attacks on someone intentionally, or physically Apart from the school, other contributors like parents have to contribute their quota in curbing bullying. Bullying preventions are listed below:

1. THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT AND TEACHERS/WORKERS SHOULD BE ON WATCH

The school workers generally, should watch out for bullying behaviors because it occurs in some areas in the school where supervision is either absent or limited. Bullying occurs in the areas such as school buses, playgrounds, dining halls, bathrooms, crowded hallways, staircases, laboratories, through cell phones, etc. Teachers and all school workers should observe and pay attention to pupils and students in the places mentioned above. Teachers should quickly intervene the moment he or she discovers this act among the students and the pupils in the classroom to put a stop to it. A careful record of the bullying scene should be recorded by teachers, presented to the head of school or administrator for investigations. The school management should handle the children involved separately because it could be humiliating and be dangerous to the bullied student/pupil.

 2. HOME IS THE FIRST SCHOOL TO LEARN ABOUT BULLYING

Every parent has to adequately equip their children with the information of what bullying is not and what is all about. This should not only be the definition of bullying and positive behaviors but what bullying looks like and how it feels like by talking to them about good and healthy relationships and the opposite of healthy relationships Parents should ensure they talk to their wards every day about their social behaviors especially at school and outside their home, Bullying bad signs must be noticed by parents. A warning sign is by studying the children’s mood and knowing when there are changes, asking them questions about places they have been to and what happened there.

 3. PARENTS SHOULD BE THEIR CHILDREN ROLE MODELS, BUILD HOMES FREE OF BULLY

Parents should try as much as possible to be role models to their children at home because children take after their parents……… therefore, portray good behaviors for them to model or emulate especially when relating with others and with your children. Don’t be too strict with them and stop being aggressive in their presence, “charity begins at home”!

4. WATCH OUT FOR BULLYING POINTERS

Parents should take note of bullying pointers in their children when they are being affected because most of these children don’t speak out when they are being bullied Bullying signs are as follows: Impatience and depression in the child’s behavior, nightmares at sleep, unnecessary crying, reduced appetite for food, refusing to go to school. When you discover some of these signs in your children, do not keep quiet about it, instead start conversations that will make your child open up to you in a friendly manner, doing this will make your child explain what happened, and you can solve this problem when you get to his/her school, assure the child that it will never happen again, counsel your child never to retaliate but rather report to his/her teacher immediately.

 5. EMPHASIS ON BULLYING AS AN ODD BEHAVIOR IN SCHOOLS IS IMPORTANT

Schools must emphatically talk about anti-bullying behaviors and constantly remind their pupils and students about the consequences of bullying in school, also anti-bullying rules should be signed in school and be submitted by parents and their children, teachers should not be excluded in signing same, doing this will make the students/teachers serious and intentional about good behaviors towards others.

 6. MONITOR YOUR CHILDREN TECHNOLOGY DEVICES

You can’t stop the children from social activities but be sure they do not practice cyberbullying by making sure they only have access to family computers and sit with them when watching their favorite programs on the TV to be sure they are not learning negative behaviors that will instill bullying habits into them.

Conclusion

The bullying problem can be resolved by empowering your children on how to stand against a bullied child without retaliating, reporting bullying behaviors often, parents should advocate against bullying and help their children school to fight it by supporting any anti-bullying programme put in place by the school through fundraising.
