STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

We live in a world where intelligence is measured by how fluent your are in spoken English. Even if that's a wrong notion, we can't deny the significance of English language in today's world. Certainly, English has nothing to do with intelligence, but it is unarguably the number one language in the world, and learning it isn't a bad idea.

Here are some of the methods I have used to improve my spoken and written English skills you too may adopt any of them to improve your English.

1. Read Books Aloud: Take anything e.g. a little book, pamphlet or an article.  Don't  read in your mind but instead, read it out loud in front of a mirror. This way your words reach your ear and it gives you opportunity to catch yourself immediately when you're making a mistake. You can keep a dictionary nearby to check the proper pronunciations. This exercise should positively help you with your English diction and written English communication.

2. By Watching A lot of English Movies: This is not only a common method, but an effective one. Watching a lot of English shows could help in no small way in improving your spoken English. It might not give you a perfect vocabulary, but it definitely helps you to learn new words and metaphors that stay in your memory for a long time. It also helps you with your everyday conversations with people here and there. Practice this and you will see improvement in your English communication skills.

3. Surrounding Yourself with Better English Speakers: Whether it is friends or colleagues or family members, solicit their help to train and work alongside you to improve your English. Make a personal timetable and inform them about it where you both speak and interact in only English language. Ask them to identify your errors and correct your mistakes.

4 Reading a lot of Newspapers and Magazines: Newspapers help a lot in. Improving English language vocabulary as the contents are composed and proofread by great English speakers. Read as many pages of the newspaper as time permits you and jot down words you have not known before. You can learn plenty of English from them and improve your vocabulary as well as your spoken English.

5. Watch talkshows:  Watching popular talk shows can make a huge influence on your English skills. The hosts and the guests of the shows are always very articulate and powerful English speakers and you will always have something new to learn. It not only leads to improvement in vocabulary but also teaches you how to suitably conduct your speech.

6. Read A Lot of Books: A lot of people believe that you can never master the English language without reading a lot of books. I do not disagree to  that. Reading widely is extremely important for the improvement of vocabulary but it's not the only thing you can do to improve your English proficiency. Reading may not always be convenient for everyone due to busy schedules. I, myself, have never been a passionate reader. I'll love to read more but due to very busy work and home schedules, I can't help it, but have my own effective ways of improving my spoken and written English.

Rome wasn't built in one day. So to become a great English speaker with fluent written and spoken English you will need a lot of time and practice. But don't be afraid to make mistakes, because if you don't, you won't learn what's right and wrong. You won't take risks, and you won't truly grasp the concepts you're learning.
